Daily walks prolong life

We all know that fresh air and exercise are helpful, but it turns out they can literally increase the duration of our lives for a few years.

This conclusion came a group of doctors led by Stephen Moore of the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda (USA) in the course of study on aging.

The study authors analyzed the information on the daily routine, health status, and finally, life expectancy 650,000 Americans older than 40 years. The data were taken over the last decade, during which time about 82 thousand of the sample had died naturally.

First, Moore and his colleagues divided the study participants into groups based on criteria such as body mass index, age, and the frequency with which they exercise. Then the researchers compared the average life expectancy in these groups.

It turned out that people paid to sports activities for at least 2.5 hours a week (the rate recommended by the Ministry of Health, USA), on average lived 3.4 years longer than those who do not do sports or gave him a small amount of time. The participants spend 7.5 hours a week for light exercise such as charging or simply walk briskly, «received» as much additional 4.5 years! But the most curious that the «gain» almost independent of body mass index: slender people if they avoided physical activity, lived as much as three years less than the sports fat men!

«Our results emphasize that physical exercise in their free time to make a major contribution to the duration of our lives – says Stephen Moore. – Regular exercise will prolong the life of each group of Americans, we have learned, including the slim and fat people, as well as people suffering from obesity. »

Of course, this does not mean that obesity is not dangerous and do not need to pay attention to your diet. It is a question only of physically active people, and lying on the couch watching television and generally sedentary lifestyle of health you do not have to add. «We found that even relatively short periods of physical activity, such as a 75-minute walk briskly once a week, have been associated with increased life expectancy, – says a colleague Moore, I-Min Lee of Harvard Medical School in Boston. – In this case, walk «added» 1.8 years of life compared with people who did not exercise. »

Results of the study refutes another widespread thesis – that provide significant health benefits just running or other athletic exercises. Apparently, just a daily walk briskly to significantly improve their health and life expectancy, respectively.
